Buying a boat?

What's Happening

December 2007: Skippers Take the Lead

Skipper

“Out on the cricket pitch good skippers lead by example. I should know, I’ve played with some of the best. But out on my boat, I’m the skipper and it’s my responsibility to make sure everyone stays safe. That’s why I always wear my lifejacket and make sure everyone else on-board does the same. Next time you’re out on your boat, make sure you take the lead with life jackets.”

Matthew Hayden – Australian Opening Test Batsman

January 2007: Changes to EPIRB's

ANZSBEG is encouraging the boating community to get in early and replace their 121.5 MHz EPIRBS for the 406 MHz beacon. To avoid high demand during the changeover period, boat owners are strongly encouraged to purchase a 406 MHz beacon by 1 July 2008 - seven months before the satellite is switched off.

Remember to register your new 406 MHz beacon at the time of purchase. If you have any queries, contact the beacon hotline on Freecall 1800 406 406 or the beacons website.

December 2005: Australian Builders Plate

The Australian Builders Plate (ABP) for recreational boat users is being progressively introduced over the next 12 months. All states and the Northern Territory aim to have legislation fully implemented by 1 July 2006.

The ABP will make recreational boating safer by providing vital information about the capacity of boats including the maximum number of people and load allowed, engine rating and weight and for boats less than 6 metres in length information about buoyancy performance. For further information go to the National Marine Safety Committee website.
